Dense living sets this suburb apart from its quieter neighbours. Victorian and Federation terraces from the railway-era boom sit beside mid-century walk-up flats along streets like Alexander Street, with newer apartment towers now rising near the Willoughby Road dining strip.

That density brings its own plumbing pattern. Root-blocked sewer lines under the older terraces can surcharge and back up into homes, something the newer towers mostly avoid but the established stock deals with often.

A root-choked line calls for blocked drains; a unit on its last legs calls for hot water repairs.

A lot of terrace kitchens and bathrooms here now run on flexible braided fittings instead of the old copper, exactly the kind prone to letting go suddenly, often years after they were fitted.

Separately, the pre-war terrace stock still carries plenty of original galvanised and clay pipe, most of it now old enough to fail suddenly, especially once a dry stretch is followed by real rain.
